Granite Names William H. Powell Chairman of the Board of Directors

WATSONVILLE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Granite Construction Incorporated (NYSE: GVA) today announced that the company's Board of Directors has named
William H. Powell chairman of the board, effective September 1, 2009. Mr. Powell, 63, who has been Granite's independent presiding director since May 2008, succeeds
David H. Watts, who will continue as a director on the board.

Mr. Powell served as chairman and chief executive officer of National Starch and Chemical Company from 1999 until he retired in 2006. He is currently the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the State Theatre Performing Arts Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and serves as a director of Arch Chemical Company Inc. and PolyOne Inc. He holds a BA degree in chemistry, an MS in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University, and an MA in business administration from the University of North Dakota.
