WATSONVILLE, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Granite ConstructionIncorporated (NYSE: GVA) has been named to FORTUNE’s tenth annual "100 BestCompanies to Work For" list. Granite ranked No. 56 on the overall list of 100companies. Granite also ranked No. 24 on the Best MEDIUM-Sized Company listthat will appear in FORTUNE’s January 22nd issue, on newsstands January 15thand at www.fortune.com on January 8th. "The 100 Best Companies to Work For" list is compiled for FORTUNE byRobert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute inSan Francisco, based on two criteria: an evaluation of the policies andculture of each company, and the opinions of the company’s employees. Thelatter is given more weight; two-thirds of the total score comes from employeeresponses to a 57-question survey which goes to a minimum of 400 randomlyselected employees from each company. More than 100,000 employees from 446companies participated in the survey this year, making this by far the largestsimultaneous employee survey in corporate America. It asks about things suchas attitudes towards management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie within theorganization. The remaining one-third of the score is based on an evaluationof each company’s demographic makeup, pay and benefits programs, and culture.Companies are scored in four areas: credibility (communication to employees),respect (opportunities and benefits), fairness (compensation, diversity), andpride/camaraderie (philanthropy, celebrations).
