WATSONVILLE, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Granite Construction Incorporated (NYSE: GVA) has been named to FORTUNE's tenth annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list. Granite ranked No. 56 on the overall list of 100 companies. Granite also ranked No. 24 on the Best MEDIUM-Sized Company list that will appear in FORTUNE's January 22nd issue, on newsstands January 15th and at www.fortune.com on January 8th. Granite has been named to the list every year since 2004.

Granite's President and Chief Executive Officer, William G. Dorey, said, "We are extremely proud of this achievement. This honor recognizes the quality of our workforce, their dedication, commitment and engagement in what they do to make Granite a great place to work. We have a very unique culture at Granite that we believe honors our people -- one that we are all very privileged to be a part of. It is a tribute to our employees that they have been able to build and maintain this culture that has remained a cornerstone of our success for over eight decades."

"The 100 Best Companies to Work For" list is compiled for FORTUNE by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, based on two criteria: an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company, and the opinions of the company's employees. The latter is given more weight; two-thirds of the total score comes from employee responses to a 57-question survey which goes to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. More than 100,000 employees from 446 companies participated in the survey this year, making this by far the largest simultaneous employee survey in corporate America. It asks about things such as attitudes towards management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie within the organization. The remaining one-third of the score is based on an evaluation of each company's demographic makeup, pay and benefits programs, and culture. Companies are scored in four areas: credibility (communication to employees), respect (opportunities and benefits), fairness (compensation, diversity), and pride/camaraderie (philanthropy, celebrations).
